"I’ve held others before, but it was never like this, where my body inhales you and quivers with bliss," A boy meets girl, fall in love, and live happily ever after. Some love stories start out like this, but this story has a little twist to it. Once you start reading it, you just can't stop. Rules of Attraction, by Simone Elkeles, is about a boy named Carlos who has been sent to Colorado from Mexico to keep him away from his gang and the type of life his brother has worked so hard to keep him out of. He doesnt like what his brother, Alex, has in store for him in Colorado. When he finally gets to Colorado, he is forced to go to school, Fairfield High School. There, he meets a girl named Kiara, a good, quiet, and smart girl, who turns his life upside down. His need to keep Kiara safe is the only thing that truly begins to change his mind. In between the fights, drugs, and gang threats, you’ll find a story of two teens falling for someone who seems wrong, but may just be the perfect match.
Love can change you from bad to good. This story isn't really a normal teenagers love life. It's a little more than that. This essay will vividly explain an unusual love story in which Kiara's modest behavior allows to bring a change in Carlos's ruthless behavior. Due to this, I could not put down the book and it made it so interesting.
The theme for Rules of Attraction, would be do not judge someone by their looks, judge for who and what they are. Throughout the book, Carlos judged Kiara by assuming that she is just a lame girl who has no life, and that he cannot hang out with her just because she's not his type. Later on in the book, Carlos realizes that Kiara is truly beautiful on the inside and on the outside. Her personality towards him and the way she changes her looks, makes him realize that he made a mistake by judging her before he even knew her. He felt guilty when he found out that she wasn't lame at all, she's actually a pretty cool girl.
The summary for this book is that Carlos was in Mexico for a year, and then ended up in Colorado after year. Kiara, on the other hand, had been living in Colorado her whole life. If the setting were to occur in a different place, then truly there would have not been any changes. If the Although, in some cases, it would. If the setting were to be in a different place, then Carlos would have not met Kiara, and Kiara would have not met Carlos. If they had not met, then they would have not changed. Carlos would still be a ruffian, and Kiara would still have been a stutterer. If the time were to change, then they would have not spoken in slang terms. Also, Carlos would have been in less danger, and Kiara would have been more of a shy person.
The main charectors of this book are Kiara and Carlos. Kiara used to be very quiet because of her stuttering problem. She did not speak up much because she didn’t want to be teased. During her senior year, she’s determined to be more outgoing and show off the more adventurous and crazy side of her personality. The real Kiara doesn’t back down from a challenge. That trait definitely sparks some interesting interactions with Carlos, who also never backs down. Carlos doesn’t listen to anyoneCarlos lives to break rules. He has a strong pride in his Mexican heritage and isn’t afraid to let everyone around him know it. When Carlos lived in Chicago, he was dating Destiny, the only girl he ever loved. But after they broke up and he moved with his mother and brother to Mexico. Later, he got into wild—partying, dating a different girl every night, and joining a gang. When Carlos moved to Colorado, he calms down after he meets Kiara. They are important to the plot because they are the main characters and they are the ones who change the climax of the book. They also show how to opposite people, bad and good, can be made for each other.
The way the author writes the text is understandable and beautiful. It makes you want to read the book over and over again. The author uses alluring words such as: kiss, sex, etc. to make it romantic. The way she uses the epilogues is truly amazing. She goes back and forth on the characters, Carlos and Kiara, on what they are experiencing. Also, another structure I liked, is how she makes it so ironic and mysterious at the end of almost every chapter.
“We kiss all the time." I clear my throat, then add, "We just...do it in private."
"A smug expression crosses his face. "I don't buy it for a second, 'cause if you were my girlfriend and a stud like me was livin' in your house, I'd kiss you in front of the guy every chance I got as a reminder." "A reminder of w-w-what?" (Elkeles, 142)
This quote makes me feel like Kiara actually has a boyfriend, and that when she stutters, she sounds like she's lying about it. Also, I think this quote shows that Carlos might be a little jealous when he found out that they don't kiss in public. The way the author wrote it look so romantic. She makes it seem like it gives you a little tingling feeling. “Tonight was... well, it was perfect for me too. You've turned my world upside down. I've fallen in love with you, chica, and it scares the f*ckin' shit outta me. I've been shakin' all night, because I knew it.I've tried to deny it, to make you think I wanted you as a fake girlfriend, but that was a lie.” (Elkeles, 254) I feel like this event was really romantic. This event shows how Kiara has turned Carlos's life upside down. It also is important because this is basically a turning point of the story where they both express each other's love to each other. The author used words like "shakin" "chica" to make it a slang. The author also made it sweet and nice when Carlos was talking to Kiara. “He’s my brother, my blood. He annoys the hell out of me most of the time, but when it comes right down to it I want to see him graduate from college and have little annoying mini-Alexes and mini-Brittanys running around in the future” (Elekeles, 312) This quote is important because Alex is showing his feelings for his little brother Carlos. It shows that no matter how much annoying your sibling can be, you can never be mad at them and will always love them. This situation can also unite the people who have been separated in the book for several reasons. The author made it pretty emotional here. She made it emotional by showing how the older brother has feelings for Carlos no matter how Carlos is.
The first cause was that Carlos is forced to move to Colorado for his safety, and his brother, Alex, sends him to school to make him a good person.
The effect was that there he meets a guy, Matt, who is part of a gang in the school, and plans to do harm to Carlos. Matt puts drugs in his book bag and the cops take Carlos to jail. The second cause was that the judge decided to send Carlos to REACH, a program to help "bad" students. Kiara's dad concluded that Carlos was going to live with them. The effect was that Carlos lives under the same roof as Kiara and slowly started falling for her actions, even though she wasn't his type. Finally the last cause was that Carlos is called to meet Devlin, a dangerous gang leader, and gets beaten up by Devlin's men. The effect was that Carlos is injured and starts showing feelings for her. He also shares secrets with her, which he doesn't do. Kiara also starts showing her feelings for him and they go to homecoming together.

"I loved Perfect Chemistry, there is something about it that is so very addictive, so when I heard that Elkeles was writing another novel about Alex's little brother, I knew I was in for a treat. Perfect Chemistry is still my favorite but Rules of Attraction was also fantastic! I'm a complete sap for the bad ass guy with the good heart. I don't know what it is but ay dios mio, I can't get enough! And Carlos definitely knew how to play the bad ass guy card. Both Carlos and Kiara are complex characters, Kiara might seem like the easier of the two to figure out, but she definitely has some hidden depths. Carlos seems like the bad guy on the outside, and he's made plenty of mistakes to get himself labeled as such, but his bad guy image isn't his problem. His problem is his pride. I loved getting to see that change throughout the novel....." (http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/7137775-rules-of-attraction, Kristi (The Story Siren))  I totally agree with Kristi. I am currently reading Perfect Chemistry, and I still think that Rules of Attraction is better. I truly like how a bad guy turned into a good guy. I like it when that occurs in reality. I also agree to Kristi, because I love how as you kept on reading the book changes.  "I loved Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles, so when I heard about this sequel needless to say, I picked it up as soon as it hit the stands. I was not disappointed… NOT.ONE.BIT! Rules of Attraction is funny, romantic, edgy and unforgettable! I loved the dialog, pranks and slapstick funny scenes throughout the novel, but most of all, I loved the sincere moments between bad-boy Carlos and goodie two shoes Kiara. It’s a page turner that will leave you sad at the end, but only because you’ve finished the book so quickly...." (http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/7137775-rules-of-attraction, Ariene)  I agree with Ariene because I love how a bad boy and a good girl go for each other at the end. Also how a bad guy can change himself when he meets the good girl. The book was really romantic and it is truly unforgettable."Rules of Attraction" was awesome. "Perfect Chemistry" had captured my heart and when I knew that Simone Elkeles was going to be writing "Rules of Attraction", I knew I had to read it. And after I read "Rules of Attraction", I was glad that it didn't disappoint me, in fact, it was seriously fantastic. Carlos Fuentes lived his first part of his life idolizing his brother, Alex Fuentes, who was once in Latino Blood. But when Alex decided to get out of the gang for a future with Brittany, Carlos felt..." (http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/7137775-rules-of-attraction, Delphine) I agree with Delphine, this book has captured my heart. It's just an unforgettable adventure.
I would really recommend this book to everyone, because this book shows how your dream girl or dream boy can be in someone opposite of the kind of person you are into.  I can relate to Kiara in many ways. You should definitely read this book, that is if you are into Romance. I can relate to Kiara in many ways. She stutters when she's in front of a crowd and I start murmuring, sometimes, when I am in front of a crowd. Also, she takes her work seriously, which is what I also do. I would truly recommend this book to everyone. Never judge anyone in anyway, because you never know how that person can turn your world upside down.

Wolf, Naomi. “Ending India’s Rape Culture.” Project Syndicate: A World of Ideas. Dec. 31.2012. http://www.project-syndicate.org/commentary/ending-india-s-rape-culture-by-naomi-wolf

Ending India’s Rape Culture

  Summary-

A 23-year old physiotherapy student is dead, because she was raped. She was travelling on a bus, when suddenly she was raped by six men. They had inserted a rod into her private area which had caused internal injuries due to the iron rod. People, many angry people, are mad that nothing is being done for the women’s safety. Women in India are not in safe conditions. The people in India think that it is due to what they wear, which is not true.

   Analysis-

Naomi Wolf has chosen a really good topic, but she is lacking something that could help the women, and the audiences understand what the 23-year old had actually went through and what lead to this issue on how it had occurred. The author should’ve given advices to the women on what they should do when they are in a difficult situation like the 23-year old. She should’ve given examples of ways to protect yourself like carrying a pepper spray in your spray, having a male escort that you can trust on, etc. This story is very important because, it may not seem like a major situation to the USA or some other parts of the country, but people out in the should know that in India and other parts of the world, the safety of women isn’t that well. This story’s issue could affect me in the future because my parents are from a similar country just like India called Bangladesh, and one day in the future I will go to Bangladesh and will have to go to places either by myself or with one of my cousins, and makes me think that not everywhere in this world is safe. Its sad how the life women in India and other parts of the world have to deal with this and not have the freedom to do things that us women and girls are able to do in the US and some other parts of the world. It also makes me upset because it shows that women don’t really have that much power and are not cared for somewhat. Women are the women’s who basically built up this planet and some are being treated as trash, animals and worthless in some countries like India. I personally know some stories that have occurred. In Bangladesh my cousin’s best friend was raped by her brother’s gang about 5 years ago. She is now 26 and her parents are trying to look for a decent for her in her life, but they can’t because she was used. She told me once that, “I literally wish that I would die, but I can’t. I have a family to look after.” Her parents are ashamed of her and the society blames it all on her. She also ended up pregnant, but had a miscarriage. She was torn into pieces. I have also recently read on yahoo news that this girl, who was in her young, was raped by 3 men in India. This story is very important to the world because it needs to be told what’s going on out in the world to women. It is not fair how women don’t have protection when they need it the most in India and other parts of the world that need it tremendously.

The Bluest Eye
By: Toni Morrison
Page: 100 of 215

Dear Author,
When I started reading the book I was pretty bored in the beginning , but as I kept on reading I noticed a connection between the character Pecola and I which made it outrageous. Pecola thinks she's ugly because of the way people look at her: the grocer looks at her when she goes to buy candy, boys make fun of her, and a girl named Maureen says she's ugly. Well sometimes, I have that feeling too. I sometimes notice or feel that when I go to the bazaar or go shopping some people just look at me up and down and say,"Hmmm that girl needs to get some sense of fashion" or something like that. I also feel as though some of my friends and some boys think Im ugly and say negative things about me behind my back about my looks, and the way  I dress. I have had a girl come up to me from no where and tell me that I have a no sense of fashion whatsoever and that I dress like I am from the 80's or something. Just like Pecola I would LOVEEE to have blue eyes. They are the most beautiful eyes I have ever seen. I wish to get blue contacts when I can, because I feel as though I can have some beauty rise upon me, just like how Pecola wants.  "I was physically revolted by and secretly frightened of those round moronic eyes, the pancake face, and orangeworms hair," (Toni Morrison Page:20) This quote makes it feel as though people, as in guys for me, like girls who have specific type of structure on them. Like the orangish hair thats wavy makes it feel as though some guys only like girls who have orange hair thats wavy, and not girls with dark brown hair thats wavy. Also, when it says "Pancake face" that makes it seem like guys, well some, don't want any girl that has any other face structure other than the pancake face. I know some people are picky, but some people should look and see how other people actually look and how beautiful they are. " Instead I looked with loathing on new dresses that required a hateful bath in a galvanized zinc tub before wearing," (Toni Morrison Page:22). This quote made me think that if "people" wear nice clothing, that is what only makes them beautiful? I thought people said that personality should be also in the package and not only looks.  Yes, I feel ugly, but that doesn't mean I want to change everything. I can also understand how when there was this one part that people were making fun of people who had eyes closer to their faces and everything and how they were called ugly and how they had it all under control when someone called them ugly. What I mean to say is that I understand that people think that certain people are ugly by only looking at what they are seeing, but shouldn't people also see the beauty they have inside them, like their personality.   I know I haven't really read further on in the book, but I can tell that Pecola and I have some connections, and I think as I keep reading it I will start liking it.

                                                                                                Sincerely;
                                                                                                                Onna Biswas

After the book more further, I can see how the book and I can relate. Zlata is a really shy but fun, loving person, and so am I. She worries about things that are either pity or big, just like me. Also, even though there are terrible things going on in her country, and is not really affecting the area where she is living in, she still moves on with her life, and tries her best to do the best things she can to make her life plentiful, before anything terrible occurs, just like me.
Interpret:
" I had a lump in my throat when Daddy said he had been called up by the police reserve. I hugged him, crying, and started begging him not to go, to stay at home." This sentence reminds me whenever its the first day of school.  After the wonderful summer break we have, I feel like I am being sent to prison or something and how hard it is to leave your family. Every first day of school whenever my dad drops me off, I give him a big hug, and get tears in my eyes. I don't know why I do this, but I've been doing this ever since I started school. I mean I know I am a big girl and all, but after all, I still am a daddy's little girl.
Evaluate
I would give this book a A, because its getting to be interesting. As I kept reading the book, it turned into a diary. It started sharing the personal feelings the writer was feeling and how she was actually living during the war. It also tells me how terrible the killing was when it killed all those innocent people. Another thing, is that it touched my heart on how she was actually feeling when she saw the killings on the news. There was also basically a pattern in the book like it started out all creepy and confusing and then it went from happy to mysterious to sad to happy to serious.

Ask
-What Does Zlata mean?
-Where is Skenderija?
-Why was the war occurring in that city?

I cant really connect anything thats related to me in the book, but I can relate the fact that we both, Zlata and I, have many dreams. I currently have so many dreams that are the same as Zlata. Also, just like Zlata I try not to think about the negative things that go around me, and try to just ignore them.
Interpret
"She is now safe, but there are thousands of other children who are not, who are just sitting in the dark around a candle, hungry, terrified by shelling, who have lost parents, brothers, sisters. It is for them that Zlata wrote this book."
This sentence in the book just touches my heat. Its so sweet of Zlata to write a book for the children who have/are going through the same situation. This sentence basically describes everything that children are going through in the book.

Evaluate
I would give this book a B+, because so far its good, but in the middle of the story, I was sort of bored because in the beginning I was just not interested in the book and it just didnt grab my attention it was just so dull, but later on in the book, it became interesting. It became interesting because it started giving some descriptive words, and it had really catchy usage of words.

Have you ever wondered what types of dance skills do Indians/Bengalis have? Have you? Well, let me tell you one thing. Ever since I was born, I have had one hobby . Dancing! Unfortunately, it isn't Hip Hop, Salsa, Tango and all other dance forms, its Bollywood. I started dancing when I was a little itty bitty child, 3 1/2 years old. I didn't know anything about dancing back then. All I wanted to do was just put make up on, put on the magnificent costumes, the gorgeous jewelry, and put any kind of music on and I would start jamming haha. But now, I go to a dance academy and have been learning various types of dance of  Indian culture. I love dancing! Its just a passion that I cannot live without, and the thing I love about it is that, wherever, whenever, however you hear music, you just start dancing. I may not be great, I may not be talented, I may not be terrible, but I love dancing. The thing I like about it is that, when its time to perform, you wear all these adornments, make up, and outstanding costumes, and being with the ones you love. Dancing is a hobby of mine, and I don't think, actually I know that I cant live with out dance. If there was a law that said that dancing has been banned, I would burn that law up or something. What about you? What do you know about Bollywood dance? Do you think its interesting?

    Dear Chamblee Charter High School,

Do you have teachers who were your favorite and ended up being fired? Would you really prefer the best teachers to be fired and have the "none" best teachers in school? Do you want your child to not have the education that you want him/her to have? Well there are gazillions of teachers out in Chicago that are on strike for their rights. Teachers are on strike for several reasons such as; principals are firing the ones that they do not like. Another reason is that, teachers are mad on how the standardized tests depend on their salary. If the teacher’s don’t stop the strike, then students will either decide to drop out of school and end up having the worst life ever!
If the strike were to continue, then both the teachers and students will be affected. not only will they worry about the increase of drop out rates, but other factors as well. One of many reasons would be that Chicago would lose many citizens. Parents would decide to move to another district, where their children will have better opportunities. With this, Chicago, would loose a lot of money, which in the future, they could be bankrupt. Having the kids hinder the peace of the community, because id s higher chance of kids getting into messed up things, such as drugs and violence. Nevertheless, standardized test scores accurately affect the teachers in a way, that if they teach in a affective way, they shouldn’t lose their salary. Which goes back to the starting statement, that if the strike were to continue, then both the students and the teachers would be affected.
According to my personal connections, teachers in our school, the best and the worst, have left and/or have been fired. The same issue is occurring in the whole country. Teachers did a good job on trying to get their rights and going on strike, but they also didn’t do the right thing by not letting the students go to school. It’s not fair how teachers should be able to get fired, depending on what students say. I mean, come one, if a student hates or dislikes a teacher, and they have the chance to show that the teacher is not doing well, and then they will eventually make them get fired.
The attacks on the Chicago strike have harmed many parents and students. Their mission was to attack the education rights. They want the children to have a better education, a bigger class size, and also the unnecessary teacher’s shouldn’t be fired for no dumb reason. It has also attacked Obama and Romney. The teachers just wanted the rights and that is why they wanted the strike.  The attack has also harmed many parents, because some of them couldn’t even go to work.
So what? Teachers have been on strike, some people cared, while some didn’t. What I think personally is that, what the teachers did was right. I mean they want the people and the government to help them and associate with them. Teachers just wanted to help the children, the current students and the future students out, and so that is why they went on strike. I understand it has harmed many students and parents in many ways, but I think it would be worth it if the government and/or the society just helped out a little.
